About migration and other short stories… or I come from the Global South #3
The performance deals with the challenges faced by migrants on their journey to Mexico. As they not only have to cross the Darien Gap but often also have to wade through the Suchiate River (on the border between Mexico and Guatemala), I too enter the water fully clothed and wearing shoes. All of this is to be understood as a metaphor. To illustrate this, I wrote a text which was displayed afterwards and could be taken away by the audience (See it below).
I stand in front of the audience. Behind me lies the lake. I begin to eat the strawberries I have brought with me, squashing them until the juice runs down my dress and stains it red.
After a while, I offer some to the audience. They are taken one by one. I leave a text at the site which the audience are allowed to read and take away.
Then I walk into the lake, still wearing my dress and shoes. I walk until I can no longer feel the bottom and let myself drift for as long as I can bear it.
After a while, I come back out. The performance is over.
