Maricruz Peñaloza wurde in Südmexiko, an der Grenze zu Guatemala, geboren und ist auch dort aufgewachsen. Sie lebt und arbeitet in Zürich.
Sie studierte Fotografie und Bildende Kunst mit Schwerpunkt Performancekunst an der F+F Schule für Kunst und Design in Zürich sowie Politikwissenschaft an der Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana-I (UAM-I) in Mexiko-Stadt. Sie ist als bildende Künstlerin und Kuratorin für Performancekunst tätig und arbeitet in den Bereichen Kunst und Lehre. Zudem ist sie Kuratorin von Performancefestivals und -veranstaltungen auf internationaler Ebene. Sie hat an zahlreichen Ausstellungen und Performancefestivals in der Schweiz und im Ausland teilgenommen.Sie arbeitet auch als Autorin. Das Schreiben ist dabei ein zentrales Medium ihrer künstlerischen Praxis.
Maricruz Peñaloza ist Gründerin und künstlerische Leiterin der PERFORMANCE REIHE NEU-OERLIKON (2019–2024). In den letzten Jahren haben verschiedene Organisatoren und Kuratoren zur Realisierung des Festivals beigetragen. Die Veranstaltungen fanden im Oerliker Park und im Wahlenpark in Zürich statt. Die letzte Ausgabe wurde von ihr zusammen mit der Künstlerin, Fotografin und Kuratorin Elsbeth Carolin Iten sowie der Künstlerin und Kunstvermittltlerin Kerstin Wittenberg organisiert und kuratiert.
2018 gründete sie zudem das Performance Open-Air St. Gallen im Stadtpark St. Gallen, das sie seitdem – ebenfalls mit verschiedenen Organisator:innenn und Kurator:innen – leitet und kuratiert. Die fünfte Ausgabe (2025) wird sie gemeinsam mit Elsbeth Carolin Iten organisieren.
Seit 2019 ist sie Mentorin und Dozentin für Performancekunst an der F+F Schule für Kunst und Design in Zürich. Bis dieses Jahr (2025) koordinierte sie dort auch das ACT Performance Festival der Schweizer Kunsthochschulen. Seit 2015 ist sie Mitglied des PANCH Performance Art Network CH, seit 2019 Vorstandsmitglied.
Sie ist Herausgeberin von substanz. Fanzines über Interviews, Performances und alles, was mit Performancekunst zu tun hat. Ausserdem ist sie Mitbegründerin des Kollektivs Las Errantes (seit 2024).
Der Schwerpunkt ihrer kuratorischen Arbeit liegt auf kulturellen und politischen Fragen im Zusammenhang mit Aktionen im öffentlichen Raum sowie auf dem Körper als politischer und sozialer Einheit, der im öffentlichen Raum agiert und dabei politische sowie kulturelle Fragen an die Gesellschaft aufwirft.
“Meine eigene künstlerische Arbeit verbindet Forschung und Poesie doch auch, ungeschminkt und schonungslos. Sie wandert durch Fragen der Migration, durch die Stimmen von Frauen, mündliche Überlieferungen sowie ineinander verwobene Geschichten persönlicher und kollektiver Identität. Im Mittelpunkt stehen aber auch Gemeinschaft und Kritik, und das Schreiben als Akt des Ausdrucks und und der Erinnerung.
Ich oszilliere zwischen der Dichotomie von Privatem und Öffentlichem, zwischen Welten. Ich komme aus dem Globalen Süden. Ich bin Mestizin.”

Maricruz Peñaloza was born and raised in southern Mexico, along the border with Guatemala. She lives and works in Zurich.
Maricruz Peñaloza studied photography and fine arts with a focus on performance art at the F+F School of Art and Design in Zurich, as well as political science at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana-I (UAM-I) in Mexico City. She is a visual artist, curator of performance art, and active in art and teaching. Curator of performance festivals and events at an international level. She has participated in numerous exhibitions and performance festivals in Switzerland and abroad. She also works as an author, writing being a central medium in her artistic practice.
Maricruz Peñaloza is the founder and artistic director of the PERFORMANCE REIHE NEU-OERLIKON (2019–2024). In recent years, various organisers and curators have contributed to the realisation of the festival. The events took place in Oerliker Park and Wahlenpark in Zurich, with the last edition organised and curated by her together with artist, photographer and curator Elsbeth Carolin Iten and artist and art educator Kerstin Wittenberg.
In 2018, she also founded the Performance Open-Air St. Gallen in the Stadtpark St. Gallen, which she has been directing and curating ever since – also with various organisers and curators. She is set to organise the fifth edition (2025) alongside Elsbeth Carolin Iten.
Since 2019, she has been a mentor and lecturer for performance art at the F+F School of Art and Design in Zurich, where she also coordinated the ACT Performance Festival of Swiss art academies until this year (2025).She has been a member of PANCH Performance Art Network CH since 2015, becoming a board member in 2019.
She is the editor of substanz. Fanzines about interviews, performances, and all things performance art. She is also a co-founder of the collective Las Errantes (2024–).
The focus of her curatorial work is on cultural and political questions relating to action in public spaces and the body as a political and social entity acting in public spaces and raising political and cultural questions for the community.
““My own artistic work iintertwines research and poetry, unvarnished and unsparing. It wanders through questions of migration, through the voices of women, oral traditions and interwoven stories of personal and collective identity. But it also focuses on community and criticism, and writing as an act of expression and remembrance.
“I oscillate between the dichotomy of the private and the public, between worlds. I come from the Global South. I am a mestiza.”
