Maricruz Peñaloza ist im Süden Mexikos geboren und aufgewachsen.. Sie lebt und arbeitet in Zürich.

Sie studierte Fotografie und Bildende Kunst mit Schwerpunkt Performance an der F+F Kunst und Design Zürich und Politikwissenschaften an der Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana-I (UAM-I) in Mexiko-Stadt.

Sie ist Künstlerin und Kuratorin von Performance-Festivals und -Veranstaltungen auf internationaler Ebene. Sie hat an zahlreichen Ausstellungen und Performance-Festivals im In- und Ausland teilgenommen.

Maricruz Peñaloza ist die Gründerin und künstlerische Leiterin der PERFORMANCE REIHE NEU-OERLIKON (2019–2024). In den vergangenen Jahren haben verschiedene OrganisatorInnen und KuratorInnen an der Realisierung des Festivals mitgewirkt. Die Veranstaltungen wurden im Oerliker Park und im Wahlenpark in Zürich durchgeführt, die letzte Ausgabe organisierte und kuratierte sie mit der Künstlerin, Fotografin und Kuratorin Elsbeth Carolin Iten und der Künstlerin und Kunstvermittlerin Kerstin Wittenberg.

Zudem gründete sie 2018 das Performance Open-Air St. Gallen im Stadtpark St. Gallen, welches sie leitet und kuratiert.

In den Jahren 2019 und 2021 organisierte und kuratierte sie die zweite und dritte Ausgabe zusammen mit Riccarda Naef. Die vierte Ausgabe im Jahr 2023 organisiert und kuratiert sie zusammen mit Noah Joel Huber. Für die fünfte Ausgabe (2025) wird Maricruz Peñalza mit der Künstlerin, Fotografin und Kuratorin Elsbeth Carolin Iten das Festival mitorganisieren.

Seit 2019 ist sie Mentorin und Dozentin für Performance an der F+F Schule für Kunst und Design Zürich und leitet zusammen mit Nicola Genovese das ACT Performance Festival der Schweizer Kunsthochschulen. Seit 2015 ist sie Mitglied von PANCH Performance Art Network Switzerland und seit 2019 Vorstandsmitglied. Sie ist Herausgeberin von substanz. Fanzines über Interviews, Performances und alles, was mit Performancekunst zu tun hat. Sie ist Teil des Kollektivs «Las Errantes» (zusammen mit der Künstlerin, Fotografin und Kuratorin Elsbeth Carolin Iten und der Künstlerin und Kunstvermittlerin Kerstin Wittenberg). Maricruz Peñaloza arbeitet auch als Autorin.

“Der Fokus meiner kuratorischen Arbeit liegt auf der kulturpolitischen Frage des Handelns im öffentlichen Raum und auf dem Körper als politisches und soziales Subjekt, das im öffentlichen Raum agiert und politische und kulturelle Fragen für die Gemeinschaft aufwirft. Der Fokus meiner künstlerischen Arbeit liegt auf der Untersuchung der Migration in ihrer allgemeinen Form sowie auf der spezifischen Situation der südlichen Grenze Mexikos. Die imaginären und narrativen Aspekte mündlich tradierter Geschichte sowie die Weitergabe von Wissen stellen einen besonderen Schwerpunkt dar. Des Weiteren besteht ein Interesse an theoretischen Aspekten wie Identität, Kommunikation und der Präsenz des Körpers. All dies wird mit einer Kritik an jeglicher Form von Gewalt und Rassismus verknüpft. Ich befinde mich in einer Dichotomie, die sich zwischen dem Privaten und dem Öffentlichen bewegt. Maricruz Peñaloza was born and raised in southern Mexico. She lives and works in Zurich.

She studied photography and fine arts with a focus on performance at F+F Kunst und Design Zurich and political science at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana-I (UAM-I) in Mexico City.

She is an artist and curator of performance festivals and events on an international level. She has participated in numerous exhibitions and performance festivals in Switzerland and abroad.

Maricruz Peñaloza is the founder and artistic director of the PERFORMANCE SERIES NEU-OERLIKON (2019–2024). Over the past few years, various organisers and curators have been invited to contribute to the realisation of the festival. The events took place in Oerliker Park and Wahlenpark in Zurich, with the last edition organised and curated by her together with artist, photographer and curator Elsbeth Carolin Iten and artist and art educator Kerstin Wittenberg.

In 2018, she also founded the Performance Open-Air St. Gallen in the city park of St. Gallen, which she directs and curates. In 2019 and 2021, she organised and curated the second and third editions together with Riccarda Naef. The fourth edition of the festival (2023) is being organised and curated by both herself and Noah Joel Huber. For the fifth edition (2025), Maricruz Peñaloza will curates and co-organise the festival with artist, photographer and curator Elsbeth Carolin Iten.

Since 2019, she has been a mentor and lecturer for performance at the F+F School of Art and Design Zurich and, together with Nicola Genovese, she co-coordinates the ACT Performance Festival of Swiss Art Academies. She has been a member of PANCH Performance Art Network Switzerland since 2015 and a board member since 2019. She is the editor of substanz. Fanzines about interviews, performances and everything related to performance art. She is part of the collective ‘Las Errantes’ (together with artist, photographer and curator Elsbeth Carolin Iten and artist and art educator Kerstin Wittenberg). Maricruz Peñaloza also works as an author.

“The focus of my curatorial work is on the cultural-political question of action in public space and on the body as a political and social subject that acts in public space and raises political and cultural questions to the community. The focus of my artistic work is on investigating migration in its general form as well as the specific situation of Mexico’s southern border. The imaginary and narrative aspects of orally transmitted history and the passing on of knowledge are a particular focus. I am also interested in theoretical aspects such as identity, communication and the presence of the body. All of this is linked to a critique of all forms of violence and racism. I find myself in a dichotomy that moves between the private and the public. I come from the Global South.” Maricruz Peñaloza.
